Occurrence:

Europe - Carpathian Mountains

Habitat:

An autochthonous breed characterized by high resistance and health, longevity and good fertility. Perfectly adapted to the difficult conditions of the mountain environment.

Food:

Hay, Straw, Silage, Dried fruits, Root crops, Young shoots of fruit trees, birches, willows, and shrubs

Reproduction:

  • Sexual maturity: 7-8 months
  • Breeding season: August-September (repeated every 3 weeks until mating - until January or March)
  • Gestation period: about 150 days
  • Number of offspring: One, sometimes two (rarely three)

Population:

Estimated population in Poland: about 278 in 2020 (covered by the Carpathian goat genetic resources protection program).

Species protection:

In early 2005, two Carpathian goat nests were found in Poland, previously considered an extinct breed. In 2006, a herd of goats was placed in the Wrocław Zoo, corresponding to the typical Carpathian goat standard. After purchasing goats with offspring and stud goats, they were placed in the Rymanów farm, which belongs to ZD Odrzechowa Sp. z o.o. Institute of Animal Husbandry.

Interesting fact:

They have a beard and often have bells on their necks, the meanings of which are still unknown today.
