Occurrence:

Arctic, Canada, Alaska, Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, Spitsbergen, Northern Scandinavia

Habitat:

Prefers areas with lots of vegetation such as forests and areas with streams.

Food:

Mainly small animals, Chicks, Puppy seals, Lemmings, Remains of polar bear prey

Reproduction:

  • Sexual maturity: 10-11 months of age
  • Breeding season: January-February
  • Gestation period: 49-57 days
  • Number of offspring: 1-12 pups

Species protection:

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Arctic fox is classified as a species of 'least concern'.

Interesting fact:

Thanks to its thick fur, these animals can withstand temperatures as low as -80 degrees Celsius. Moreover, the thick fur allows Arctic foxes to sleep in the snow for up to an hour.
